The Infectious Disease Research Institute (IDRI) is a Seattle-based non-profit research organization committed to developing products to prevent, detect and treat infectious diseases. IDRI translates basic research to develop vaccines, diagnostics and drugs for applications in global health. We focus on antigen discovery and development, adjuvant formulation and delivery, therapeutic molecule discovery and development, and biomarker discovery for diagnostics. IDRI’s leadership in the global health community extends to international alliances and partnerships with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, universities, research institutes, governments, and public health organizations.


A fully supported postdoctoral position is available in the Immunology Group to elucidate the mechanisms of action of vaccines and adjuvants and develop new adjuvants.  The successful candidate will be responsible for leading laboratory investigations in these areas under the direction of Dr. Mark Orr, Senior Scientist. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for producing first authored publications.



  • Design and execute research projects that advance the determination of the mechanisms of adjuvant action.

  • Design and execute research projects to develop new vaccine adjuvants

  • Acquire and analyze data

  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals

  • Presents research at group and internal/external scientific meetings

  • Participate in grant writing

  • Communicate with research management on a regular basis

  • Supervision of research assistant(s) and/or associate(s)


  • A Ph.D. with related laboratory experience in Immunology, Pathobiology, Microbiology or similar field

  • A strong track record of publication

  • Experience and skills in preclinical immunology assays

  • Experience working with small animal models

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

  • Must be self-motivated, organized and be able to work within a team

  • Expertise with one or more of the following areas: vaccine development, T or B cell effector or memory functions, or innate immunology

  • Familiarity with current immunological or microbiological assays such as: Flow cytometry, ELISpots, Luminex, antibody neutralization, ELISA, microarray analysis, histology.

  • Expertise with gene array analysis a strong plus

  • Proficiency with appropriate usage of statistical methods for data analysis

  • Familiarity with data analysis and graphing software such as FlowJo, Prism, and/or Tableau

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information

  • Ability to work with co-workers and outside agencies professionally and tactfully

  • Possess a work ethic that includes neatness, punctuality, and accuracy
