The TB Discovery Group is looking for a post-doctoral scientist to work in the drug discovery group on a project to understand the biology and physiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The successful candidate will work on a project aimed at investigating the role of a type VII secretion system in mediating resistance to new antimicrobial agents, and to determine how these novel compounds kill the bacteria.


  • Work under Biosafety Level 3 conditions with Mycobacterium tuberculosis
  • Conduct research to understand the mode of action of novel anti-mycobacterial compounds
  • Conduct research to determine the role of secretion in mediating drug resistance
  • Use a number of approaches combining microbiology, molecular biology and biochemistry methods
  • Genetic manipulation of mycobacteria, particularly M. tuberculosis
  • Design and implement research plans
  • Troubleshoot and solve experimental and technical problems
  • Write manuscripts and assist with grant preparation
  • Contribute freely to the team research environment in a manner conducive to the success of the research project as a whole

Requirements

  • Graduate in relevant biological science
  • PhD in relevant area of microbiology or molecular biology
  • Laboratory bench skills
  • Research skills in microbiology and/or molecular biology
  • Good communication skills
  • Computer literacy, including word processing, Excel and literature searches
  • Scientific publication record
  • Experience working with mycobacteria or other pathogens
  • Biosafety level 3 (BSL3) experience
  • Ability to work with hazardous organisms at BSL3 level
  • Ability to maintain good laboratory records
  • Ability to organize and prioritize own work
  • Ability to write papers
  • Ability to generate scientific hypotheses
  • Ability to work effectively in collaborative laboratory environment with multiple ongoing projects
  • Ability to work with co-workers and outside agencies professionally and tactfully
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Willingness to learn new skills
  • Possess a work ethic that includes neatness, punctuality, and accuracy
